Confirmation Preparation

Confirmation is a rite of adult commitment to Christian faith and to membership of and service in the Christian church. It is the Bishop who confirms by the laying on of hands with prayer, asking God to 'confirm your servant' with the Holy Spirit: 'the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and inward strength, the Spirit of knowledge and true godliness' (words taken from the Confirmation service). Confirmation normally follows a period of preparation, undertaken over several months, giving an opportunity to explore Christian faith and life in some depth. Confirmation, perhaps with other candidates from this parish, may be in one of our parish churches, or in another nearby parish. The Parish Clergy (Revd Ruth Hind and Revd Lindsay Southern) are always happy to discuss the possibility of being prepared for Confirmation.
Confirmation has traditionally been regarded as a 'gateway' to receiving the bread and wine of Holy Communion, although Anglican theology understands Baptism as conferring full membership of the church and therefore the right, and the privilege, of receiving Communion. This parish has recently adopted a policy whereby children from around the age of 7 may be admitted to Communion by the parish priest following a short (6 week) preparation course. Such children are then encouraged to seek Confirmation as an adult step, from their mid teens onwards. For further information about Admission to Communion, please speak to Ruth or Lindsay
